As some of our most passionate and dedicated volunteers, puppy raisers provide the loving homes that care for our Foundation puppies until the dogs are old enough to enter our certified training programs.  Puppy raisers play a vital role in the development of these future assistance dogs when taking home an 8-week old pup; caring for,
teaching, and socialising them until they are between 14 and 18 months old. We encourage them to provide common day-to-day socialising opportunities and exposure to new and diverse surroundings.  The puppy raiser will also help teach the puppy basic obedience, such as how to walk on a leash, sit and stay, down, and to come
when called.  A socialised puppy will have fewer adjustments to make when it comes back to the Foundation for formal training. We focus on positive socialisation, basic obedience, and molding ideal house manners during the puppy phase. The pup will accompany the raiser regularly outside of the home as he or she matures and ventures out on public outings.

We also ask our raisers take their puppy to basic obedience classes. The classes allow the puppy to interact with other dogs and gives the puppy raiser the opportunity to talk to other puppy raisers.
When the dog is at the 14- to 18-month age range, the master trainer will start with his daily formal training and life-changing career as a guide or service dog.
Once the dog is placed with its handler, the puppy raiser will be invited to attend a Foundation graduation ceremony where they can see first-hand the life-changing difference they made in someone's life.

CO-RAISE A PUPPY
If you would love to raise a puppy to become an assistance dog but don’t think you can commit to being a full-time puppy raiser – we have anotheroption - You can co-raise!

Co-raising is when two families in the same geographical area share responsibilities for raising a puppy.  You decide what works best for you, whether you alternate weeks, days, nights.  We can help you find another
family that will match your schedule, or you can let us know if you have a close friend or family member who will work with you.   The requirement is that you both have the same puppy advisor, the person
who is your contact here at the Foundation to answer all things puppy! You would coordinate with them to work out the logistics of transporting the dog back and forth to each home. Co-raising is a win-win for all involved: It gives the dog more exposure to new people, areas, and situations, and it allows people with time
restrictions to help change the life of someone with disabilities. We have had great success with co-raising, because it has proven extremely flexible for everyone involved.  Our own puppy trainer in pune
has co-raised puppies when she was in college, and she found it was a
great way to integrate a busy  schedule with puppy raising.
